The architect was approached to design a built-in to replace an outdated one in a compact townhouse in Boston's South End neighborhood. Challenges were uncovered as demolition began: a once-active fireplace was discovered behind an existing panel, as well as ductwork that passed through to the floor above. The scope of work was altered to make this fireplace functional again and to find a way to minimize the ductwork that took up so much valuable space.

The solution utilized a high velocity air system to maximize usable space in the built in and incorporated an antique pair of doors the homeowner had just brought back from China. The resulting piece functioned as a coat closet, entertainment center, and fully functioning gas fireplace, with additional storage across the top of the unit.
